It's unbelievable how often I've almost clicked onto tumblr tonight on sheer autopilot. Since that's not gonna happen, I thought I'd set up a dreamwidth account instead, do something useful with my time.
...as I'm just young enough to never have had an LJ, I have no idea what I'm doing so far.

Welcome! There's some guides posted up at the_great_tumblr_purge and in the comments of the dw_news welcome post, if you're interested! I've also seen someone recommend potofsoup's "DW for LJ users" writeups.

Why, thank you! How nice of you; some guidelines are very welcome as I'm currently just, uh, fumbling around a bit, being somewhat overwhelmed with Dreamwidth's number of options to do things at every corner and on ever side, haha.

And can I also ask: How did you even find this post to comment on just now? I pretty much didn't tag it anything and I'm not connected to anyone or anything on her yet and we don't know each other, so...? Don't get me wrong, I'm thankful that you did, but I'm also kind of mystified at how you got here xD

A magician never reveals thei-- *cough* Actually, if you go to Explore -> Latest Things, it shows the hundred most recently posted public entries. I've been on this site for 8 years and only found out about Latest Things, like, last week, so now you are way ahead of me :P

As it happens, tagging doesn't work like that on Dreamwidth anyway -- they're for your own organization, not for public indexing!

Same, lol. I keep opening the app on my phone and being like, whoops, nothing to see here today. And I never had a LiveJournal either but I kinda like Dreamwidth so far. Welcome welcome :D

Thank you :D Hah, we just cross-left each other a comment it seems. I'm not entirely sure yet what I think of this entire set-up here, but somehow it's... it feels a little more sheltered? In a way? So, that's kinda nice. More isolated, but also quite relaxing.

Yeah we did lol. I like that sheltered feeling. Somebody I follow (a_candle_for_sherlock) made the analogy that tumblr is a big city where everything flashes by at a million miles an hour and you have to actively look for slower, cozier spaces, whereas this is a college dorm building where you go and sit on your friend's bed and chat with them about the day and I think that's charming, tbh.

Haha, I literally /just/ read that analogy by a_candle_for_sherlock! I was looking at who you're following (subscribing?) so far and that's one of the names I know of old so I went right over there and checked it out, too. It's a really good analogy, I think. I love tumblr a lot -- it's been my first real online space, and it's given and taught me a lot -- and I'm feeling a bit stumped here with the lack of global tags to search for content the way I'm used to, tbh, but... I wasn't anticipating how strangely grounding it feels to be here. I think I can get used to it, if (hopefully) not as a full replacement for tumblr, then as a second fannish space to occupy.

Yeah searching for content on here is a bit weird. I am not sure but I think the way tags might function on here is to tag your blog as a blog about [interest] and then when people search for that interest your blog comes up according to how recently you've made any post, regardless of whether it was also tagged with the interest. I'm still figuring it out as well.

Yes, that's the impression I've got as well. Which... does get you some content, I suppose, but it's not very convenient. I mean I just tagged my blog as all sorts of things that I /am/ interested in, but that doesn't mean I'll ever create much original content about many of them that'd actually be on my blog. From what I've seen, communities are your best bet to get something similar to a tumblr dashboard experience. But I'm open to see how this site develops, especially as I'm sure it will populate much more than it currently is in the upcoming months.
